Summary

We are looking for a Data Processing Service Engineer in order to provide engineering consultancy to design and system engineering/re-engineering activities, fully system lifecycle, in the area of the Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Multi Mission Element framework, which consists in a system of offline Ground Segment elements, specifically for the Long Trend Analysis, Quality Monitoring and Reporting aimed to support the operational activities of existing and future programmes. Candidate areas are programmes such as EPS, MSG, MTG, EPS-SG, Jason-CS, and Sentinel 3.

Responsabilities / Duties

The tasks of the contractor will be carried out mainly at EUMETSAT facilities in Darmstadt. Typical tasks will include in general the contribution to the definition, design, implementation and maintenance of architectures for data processing ground segments and their components – with special emphasis on product quality control and validation, production monitoring and reporting, which will mainly include:

  • Maintenance and evolutions of applications system in the area of the Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Multi Mission Element framework and in all its components
  • Configuration Management, building and distribution of applications software releases and patches
  • Contribution to applications software system design and re-engineering in the area of the Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Multi Mission Element framework

Another key role will be the supporting the operations of existing data processing ground segments and their maintenance and evolution, especially upgrading software including the implementation and maintenance of new algorithms for product quality control and calibration/validation activities.

Performing routine tasks in operational systems under configuration control will be from importance for this position as well, which means:

  • Contribution to the configuration management process and the building and distribution of software releases and patches
  • Contribution to the development, integration and configuration management of software developed by 3rd parties, its installation, and configuration and testing
  • Anomaly investigations, documentation and classification
  • Follow-up of the delivery of software resolutions for these anomalies

Performing standard software engineering activities such as:

  • Software testing in a structured approach to verify, that delivered software is fulfilling the requirements or to demonstrate that problems have been corrected
  • Software integration and verification in the EUMETSAT ground segments
  • Setting-up and implementation of maintenance policies and procedures
  • Contribution to the procurement and installation of software, and the co-ordination with external providers of support services
    Participation in meetings and formal reviews

Qualifications / Experience

  • University degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline;
  • Relevant requirements in preparation of requirements, design, interfaces and testing documentation for data processing systems considering the systems engineering aspects of data processing managements and data provision;
  • Experience in software design, software development, web applications programming, operation, maintenance and trouble shooting of large complex real-time data processing systems for Earth observation missions;
  • Object-oriented software design and implementation possibly in the context of satellite instrument data processing systems;

Essential Skills

Experience and demonstrated knowledge in the following areas:

  • C/C++ programming language experience in a UNIX/LINUX based environment
  • Use of application programming of database systems (e.g. ORACLE, INFORMIX, PostgreSQL and MySQL)
  • Competence in the use of scripting languages (e.g. shell scripting), high-level languages (e.g. Python, Java) and correspondent using of their libraries
  • Ability to write accurate and consistent technical documentation
